Directory of Directories of Directories?

What is a directory of directories of directories? To answer that question, let’s begin with what the directory is directing people to, which are the web sites.

Web Site

A web site, also known as a website, or simply a site, is a set of related web pages that are served from the same web domain, which is hosted on at least one web server, and accessible through the Internet, or private Intranet. Web sites are found through the use of a Uniform Resource Locator, more commonly referred to as a URL. The collection of accessible websites comprise the World Wide Web.

A web page is a document, often created in plain text that is interspersed with Hypertext Markup Language, generally referred to by its acronyms, HTML or XHTML. A web page may incorporate and link to elements from other web sites using markup anchors.

Web pages are accessed and transported through Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which may utilize encryption, known as HTTP Secure, or by its acronym, HTTPS, in order to employ a measure of security and privacy for the user. Users access web pages through web browser, which render the content of the web site’s pages according to its HTML instructions onto a display terminal known as a monitor or screen.

While people generally refer to this action as “going to” a web page, in actuality the web page is brought to the user’s monitor.

A web site’s pages are generally accessed through the Uniform Resource Locator, or URL, which is known as a web address. The pages of the web site are organized into a hierarchy through their URLs. Hyperlinking between pages creates a navigation scheme, giving a sense of the site structure, which generally begins with a home page, or index page, which includes links to the most significant parts of the site’s content.

Directory

One of the ways in which people can find the web sites that they are looking for is through a web directory. The same holds true for blog directories, forum directories, and other types of online directories but, to keep it simple, we’ll talk about web directories.

Search engines are another way in which people can find web sites, but a web directory is not a search engine. Unlike a search engine, a web directory does not display lists of web pages based on keywords or key phrases that are entered into a search field, although many web directories include search fields.

A web directory lists web sites by categories and subcategories, and are intended to be used by human beings, although they are also spidered by search engine crawlers. A web directory will list sites within its database by topic or geographic location, usually based on the overall content of an entire web site rather than on one page, or a set of keywords. In a directory, web sites are usually limited in the number of categories that they can be listed in, often to only one per directory.

Web directories usually allow web set owners, often known as webmasters, to submit their sites for inclusion in the directory’s database. Well maintained web directories also employ editors who review submitted sites to ensure that the web site’s content meets the requirements to be listed in that particular directory, and that the submitted title and site description are written according to the directory’s submission guidelines, as well as to make sure that the web site is listed in the most appropriate category or categories.

Directory editors usually perform many other tasks as well, including developing or modifying the directory’s taxonomy, or category structure, checking to make sure that listed sites are still valid, and that expired sites are removed from the directory’s listings.

There are many different types of directories, and some of them are known by a variety of names. Some directories are general in nature, listing web sites that cover a wide range of topics, regions, and languages, while others are more specific in nature, perhaps restricting their focus on specific regions, single languages, or narrow topics. More restrictive directories may be known as niche directories.

Directory of Directories

A directory of directories is a specific type of directory that helps people find directories. The audiences of a directory of directories may include webmasters who are looking for directories to which they might submit their web sites, as well as directory operators who are interested in marketing their directories so that webmasters might more easily find them.

Directory of Directories of Directories

The WDR Directory of Directories of Directories is, as far as I know, one of a kind, although many general web directories include sections that are set aside for the listing of directories of directories.

A directory of directories of directories helps directory operators located directories of directories to which they might submit their directory sites. It may also be used by directory of directories operators as a way in which they can promote their particular type of directory.

To be honest, the WDR Directory of Directories of Directories started off as a bit of a joke, but I don intend to list every worthwhile directory of directories that I am able to find, and I do hope that this particular type of directory might be of use to someone.

What does a directory of directories of directories list? Well, it’s easier to begin with what we don’t list. We don’t list ordinary web sites, and we don’t list ordinary directories. We do list the directories that list the directories or, as we state it on our slogan, we list the sites that list the sites that list the sites.
